About Dr. Fareed Curmally

Early Beginnings
Born in Bombay in 1962, Fareed’s musical journey began with private piano tuitions at age eight. He took the LRSM Diploma, winning double scholarships to the Royal Colleges in London at age 17. He obtained the Sir Adrian Bolt Cup for his magna cum laude performance. He graduated from Grant Medical College in Bombay with summa cum laude in 1985.
Mixing Career and Passion
Fareed continued to pursue his musical career while practicing as a doctor in London and Mumbai over the next 40 years. He has gained experience performing all over India at the highest venues, including Kamani Auditorium and India International Centre, in Delhi, The NCPA in Bombay, The Calcutta & Delhi Schools of Music, and the Kala Academy in Goa, among many others, sponsored by institutions like Alliance Francaise and Max Mueller Bhavan (Goethe Institute).
Additionally, he partnered with French pianist Chantal de Salaberry in 4 hand recitals all over Belgium, France and India, including appearances at the Belgian Embassies and Consulates in Warsaw and Mumbai - this partnership lasted 10 years with many pieces receiving their premieres. His passion for sharing his knowledge and love for music drove him to promote and perform the work of the Indian composer late Vanraj Bhatia in India and abroad. Additionally, he has taught music widely in school settings and in courses designed for corporate trainees.
Fareed has great knowledge of the piano’s repertoire, a command of classical music history and composers, and is conversant with opera singers and singing. Having coached and worked with opera singers from around the world, his knowledge of opera is renowned, and he is a frequent visitor to Music Centres, Opera Houses, Festivals and Seasons across the UK and Europe to spot the best talent worldwide.

He remains the only Indian invited as a music critic to La Scala in Milan and to the legendary Verdi festival in Parma in Northern Italy. As a contributor to Serenade Magazine and Classical Music Daily, He now specialises in writing Opra criticism.
